Kolkata: At least 10 people died and 15 others were injured when a minibus fell off a flyover and fell on the rail tracks of the Howrah Railway station.

Eyewitnesses say the bus was speeding on the wet road.

“I saw the bus coming and suddenly skid and climbed on the pavement. I then saw it topple and fall. It had skid at a good speed and was probably trying to overtake,” says an eyewitness.

Local people rushed to help in the rescue operations while the police and railway officials took over half an hour to reach the accident site. They also failed to confirm the cause of the accident.

“Nine dead and 11 people are injured so far. The reason of the accident is yet not known. We are investigating the matter, it could be fault of the driver, technical fault etc,” says Howrah SP Neeraj Kumar Singh.

While the police focused on identifying the belongings of the passengers aboard the ill-fated bus, railway personnel concentrated on removing the debris from the tracks.

Officials also said that the accident had caused sufficient damage to the tracks and overhead railway wires at the Howrah station.

The victims were rushed to the Howrah district hospital where long queues of worried relatives waited to find out about their kins.

“It is due to the commission system – the driver who reaches first will get more commission – which encourages the bus drivers to drive rashly. This system should be immediately scrapped by the state government,"
— Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee told CNN-IBN reacting to the Howrah bus accident.
