Mumbai: It's the curious case of missing sperm. One-hundred-and-one bottles full of sperm samples were stolen from a sperm bank in Aurangabad and the thief was arrested in Mumbai.
The theft is so unusual, that Aurangabad Police had to be explained as to exactly what the laboratory was doing, and how the sperm was frozen.
But what everyone wanted to know was, why exactly had the accused — Anil Mohite — stolen the sperm samples?
This is what Mohite told the police: "I was told to take 100 bottles to Mumbai, and to keep this a secret. I was supposed to give then to a laboratory in Kandivali, who would then despatch them locally. I was told I would get Rs 450 per sample."
After interrogating Mohite, the police have arrested three other employees at the laboratory, including one who is Mohite's relative.
They are also investigating whether there is an organised racket at work since sperm samples are routines used for infertility treatment and artificial insemination.
However, experts say there is little reason to steal sperm samples because it's something thats easily available.
Fertility expert, Nandita Palshitkar says, "This guy seems like he doesn't know what he was doing. Sperm samples have to be stored in liquid nitrogen under specific temperature. They cannot last for more than two hours under normal temperature and they are easily available."
But experts agree that this theft can be dangerous as the samples are always marked with detailed information about the donor, and have to be screened for diseases like HIV.
