SP's 'great betrayal' cracks Third Front

New Delhi: The nuclear endgame took another twist on Saturday morning with the Third Front split over the Indo-US nuclear deal coming out in open.

A day after Samajwadi Party leaders Mulayam Singh and Amar Singh met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi to seal the deal, INLD chief Om Prakash Chautala said the UNPA does not see eye-to-eye with the SP any more.

Chautala also indicated a split in the Third Front, saying a final decision will be taken in Sunday’s meeting of UNPA members.

“I am pained to know that Samajwadi Party is no longer a part of the UNPA. This despite Mulayam being the founder member of the alliance,” he said.

The UNPA comprises parties like Telugu Desam, the Samajwadi Party, the AGP, and Chautala's Haryana party, who were claiming to represent a non-Congress, non-BJP front.

But with the Samajwadi Party hitching up with the Congress, other UNPA members too could now move in their own direction.

Speaking with CNN-IBN, Chautala said SP’s move is surprising since Mulayam Singh was against the nuclear deal from the beginning. He also warned that trusting Congress is fraught with risks.

“This alliance is neither is in their (SP) interest nor nation’s. Earlier too, SP tolerated insult and supported UPA and also in UP. Now whether they want to do it again is their wish,” he said.

However, TDP spokesperson Mysoora Reddy said Mulayam's movement won't bring down UPA.

“Realistic formations won’t work because this is just a numbers game in future elections, our numbers may be up. Not numbers, but object and principle are the criteria. We are not shaking hands with NDA (sic). We will keep away from NDA and UPA. We will contest our own elections from Andhra Pradesh. Our decisions will be based on our own views,” Reddy said.

Interestingly, on July 3, SP leader Amar Singh dispelled rumours of a split in the UNPA and said the Third Front stood “united”.

Mulayam Singh too said the UNPA would not support anything that is not in national interest.

"The UNPA will not support anything that will jeopardize the interest of the nation. We will not let communal forces gain strength," he said.
