Sports bike makers ride into India

New Delhi: There is a new set of wheels in town - big boys like BMW, Mercedes and Volkswagen are spinning a success story with their top bikes in India.

Get ready to dole out anywhere between Rs 13,000 to Rs 1 lakh for these mean machines!

India's new found obsession with getting into shape has given the bicycle business a new spin.

But these are no regular bikes. They are the high-end bikes and their market is seeing a growth in the country.

Around 14 million bicycles are sold in India each year with fancy bicycles comprising at least 30 per cent of total sales and this is prompting global sports bike manufacturers to ride into India.

The largest US manufacturer - Trek - has appointed Firefox Bikes as its exclusive distributor in India.

Says International Territory Head, Trek USA, Pete St Onge, "India is by far the most exciting of the bunch. But with 107 countries under our belt now, we are getting pretty diverse and we are ready to develop our market share with each of these countries and educating people on the merits of leisure and recreational cycling."

Trek will initially launch five popular models of its mountain bikes in India, priced anywhere between Rs 13,500 to Rs 33000.

And if there is a Ferrari, a Mercedes cannot be far behind!

Mercedes Benz has begun importing high-end bikes on demand for select customers but their hot wheels will push the pocket back by anywhere between Rs 1 and 1.5 lakh.

Mercedes has already sold about 10 mountain bikes since their launch in April this year.

Also getting onto the bike bandwagon are BMW, Volkswagens and Yamaha. Their mountain bike range will start at Rs 50,000 and go up to a few lakhs. So get ready cycle away in style.
