Allahabad: In a case of unrequited love going awry, a teenage girl was on Monday shot dead in broad daylight on a busy street near the railway junction allegedly by a classmate whose advances were spurned by her.

Anamika Singh (17), a student of BA first year in a city- based degree college and resident of Dhoomanganj locality was shot dead in Shahganj area, Superintendent of Police (city) Udaishankar Jaiswal said.

He said the assailant immediately fled the spot, but her family members have lodged a police complaint alleging that she was being stalked by a classmate of hers and they suspect him to be the killer.

A hunt was on for the alleged killer, whom the girl's family accuse of harassing the girl "to the extent that for the past one month she had given up attending classes", Jaiswal said.
