New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday asked the Centre and eight state governments about what is being done to stop the barbaric practice of honour killings.
The court was reacting after another couple was hanged in Haryana's Bhiwani, allegedly by relatives who opposed their marriage.
On Sunday night, the bodies of 22-year-old Pinku and 20-year-old Monica were found hanging from a tree in Bhiwani. They belonged to the same caste. Six of Monica's relatives including her mother have been booked for murder.
"The boy was first beaten and later was hanged along with the girl. The post-mortem report will reveal the truth," said Pream Bura, Bhiwani police station in-charge.
In another incident of what could be an honour killing 24-year-old Monica and 26-year-old Kuldeep were found dead in Delhi's Ashok Nagar on Sunday night. While Monica's body was found in the house, Kuldeep's was found in this car. Monica was a Gujjar and Kuldeep, a Rajput.
"It was an inter-caste marriage. It looks like a case of honour killing to us," said police officer Ajit Singh.
In just seven days, the Delhi murders could be the fourth case of honour killing that has been reported.
On June 14, Asha and her husband were found murdered at her uncle's house in Delhi's Swaroop Nagar and three days later a young couple, Khushboo and Kamlesh, were found murdered in Punjab's Phagwara district.
The two of them had eloped after Khushboo's family refused to accept their relationship because Kamlesh belonged to a lower caste.
"Since the past two months they have been married without the consent of their family and this seems to be a case of honour killing," said Kapurthla SP Kamaljeet Singh Dhillon.
While questions are now being raised about whether a separate law is needed for such murders, the Supreme Court on Monday issued notices to the Central and eight states asking them to take stern action against honour killings. But the question remains...how long will it take to stop these murders committed in the name of honour?
