Sr executive burnt to death, in-laws held

New Delhi: A 28-year-old senior executive with a multinational car company in Delhi allegedly made a frantic call to the police that she feared for her life from her husband and in-laws.

The police arrived a few hours later to find her having been burnt alive, allegedly by her in-laws who wanted more dowry.

Her six-year-old daughter is too young to understand what has happened to her mother.

Deepika, an executive in a car company was allegedly burnt to death by her husband's family on Sunday morning.

It is alleged that Deepika's call to the PCR at 0830 hrs saying she was being threatened got a delayed response from the police.

Deepika's mother Varsha kakkar said, "They never treated her well. whenever the couple had differences, her mother-in-law would fight with her and say if she was unhappy she should ask for a divorce."

Distraught father, C S Kakkar said, "They asked for 2.5 lakhs for a car, I gave it. He also took five lakhs for the house construction work. But beyond that I could not meet their demands."

Reportedly Deepika had complained about dowry harassment to the Crimes Against Women cell nearly three months ago. In fact the police had even visited her home on July 16 and counselled the family. the police had asked the family to settle their problems.

After Deepika's death, the police has detained Deepika's in-laws and her huband's brother. But her husband, Aditya is still absconding.

DCP , East Delhi Anand Mohan said, "We are proceeding in this case on the prima facie statement of the girl. We are registering the case under section 302, treating it as murder. Investigations will go on side by side."

What is really shocking is that the police seems to have swung into action only after Deepika's death. The National Crime Records Bureau says more than 6000 dowry deaths occur in India every year.

Deepika's family feel the police treated her complaint lightly when she was alive. the family also prays now that even if after their beloved daughter's death, some justice will be done and the perpetrators of the crime be brought to book.
