Sri Lanka forces capture key LTTE supply base

New Delhi: The Sri Lankan forces have captured Pooneryn, until now a key supply base for the LTTE.

Pooneryn is on Sri Lanka's north western coast and was a key supply and logistics base for the LTTE. The rebels used to smuggle in arms, ammunition and food into Pooneryn reportedly from India for onward transhipment to Jaffna and eastern Sri Lanka.

The fall of Pooneryn now opens a land route to Jaffna. Until now it had been supplied solely by air and by sea. The other land route is through the Elephant Pass which is still held by the LTTE.

Military experts say the next decisive round of operations could well be driving out the LTTE from Elephant Pass. That would reunite the north and south of the country for the first time in eight years.

Meanwhile in India, there are fresh worries for the Centre as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has renewed his threat to pull out of the UPA over the military offensive in Northern Sri Lanka. This comes in the wake of Sri Lanka's fresh offensive against the LTTE.

"Terrorists are there in all the states, are terrorists not in India? Are they not in Pakistan? Are they not in America? England? But are the governments of these countries throwing bombs on their own people to counter terrorism? No, so this had to be explained by our Prime Minister to Rajapakse to follow it," he said.
