Thanjavur: Tamil Nadu Police has arrested 12 people on Sunday in connection with the assault of a Sri Lankan monk in Thanjavur. The monk, who is on a study tour, was assaulted by members of outfits protesting against alleged atrocities on Lankan Tamils.

A van carrying him and students of the Institute of Archaeology of the Archaeological Survey of India was also pelted with stones.

Meanwhile, 29 activists of a pro-Tamil outfit were on Saturday arrested when they attempted to stage black flag demonstration against Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram near Karaikudi denouncing Centre's stand on the Sri Lankan Tamils issue.
