New Delhi: The Sri Lankan government faces an uncertain future as its majority in Parliament has been reduced to one, after the Lanka Muslim Congress withdrew its support.
If Parliament votes against the budget on Friday, which is in its crucial third stage, President Rajapakse may have no option but to dissolve parliament and order fresh elections.
Reports from Colombo suggest the government is seeking the backing of the Marxist JVP to avoid a defeat.
Even if the government falls, it will not affect Rajapakse who was elected in 2005 and serves a six year term.
The ruling coalition received a setback on Wednesday when four members of the Lanka Muslim Congress quit the coalition and joined the opposition.
