Srikrishna Report: Special courts to handle cases

New Delhi: The Maharashtra government has decided to set up special courts to deal with the serious cases mentioned in the Srikrishna Comission report on the 1992- 93 Mumbai blasts. The special courts will handle roughly a dozen cases.

The communal riots in Mumbai had followed the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya on December 6, 1992.

Around a thousand people were killed in the riots. Among those blamed by Srikrishna Commission for the riots is the Shiv Sena led by Bal Thackeray.

The then Sena government had even disbanded the commission but had to reconstitute it after public outcry.

The state government's decision to set up special courts follows criticism of inaction over the Srikrishna report.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh on Sunday had said the Srikrishna Commission Report would be implemented and necessary steps taken in this regard.

Deshmukh had met Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil and Congress President Sonia Gandhi in New Dalhi and apprised them of the state government's stand and position on the report, an official release here said.

After the meeting, the Chief Minister told reporters in New Delhi that many NGOs and associations had shown their displeasure to the government's attempt of implementing the report and some of the organisations had filed PIL in the Supreme Court in this regard.

The Maharashtra government will appoint various cells for the implementation of the report, the release had said.

''Since the report is in court purview, the timeframe for the implementation of the report or any other details cannot be decided now,'' the release had added.
