Srinagar rages against sex scam

Press Trust Of India

Srinagar: Police in Srinagar on Thursday lobbed tear gas shells and used batons to disperse college students who were protesting alleged police inaction against accused in a sex racket.

Kashmir University and Regional Engineering College tried to take out a procession in defiance of prohibitory orders, said officials. The students staged demonstrations before attempting to march towards Lal Chowk.

When they reached the Nigeen police station near Lal Chowk, policemen asked them to disperse. Policemen used batons and fired tear gas shells when the students tried to march on.

An angry mob had yesterday attacked two houses of the alleged kingpin of the racket and clashed with the police to protest the "failure" of the authorities to act against those involved in the scandal. The Kashmir Valley also observed a total shutdown over the issue.

However, the situation in rest of the city and elsewhere in the Valley was normal on Saturday, officials said.

A CBI team is reaching Srinagar on Saturday and take over the case
