Mumbai: Along with many big Bollywood releases, this Diwali movie lovers will also get to watch a big release from the south - Pazhassi Raja.
The movie, which is about the first organised freedom struggle against the British, is one of the most expensive Malyalam productions and stars Mammootty.
Over 50 years before The Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, a king in Kerala reportedly led the first organised revolt against the British rule which went unnoticed. But now the Malayalam film industry has decided to pay a tribute to the king and it is Mammootty who will be playing the protagonist of the film.
The movie also stars Tamil actor Sarath Kumar and is directed by Hariharand and penned by noted Sahitya Akademi Award winner MT Vasudevan Nair.
“We say a lot about the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, which is considered as a revolt against the British. But there was a small kingdom and a small ruler who was not very powerful but still fought against the British,” says Nair.
Mammootty plays the Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja, who led the farmers from Malabar to revolt against the East India Company for implementation of heavy taxes on pepper cultivation.
“There are a lot of unknown historical figures and we as Malayalees should take pride in the fact that Pazhassi Raja was a part of the Indian Freedom struggle and I am certain that this film will bring in a lot of excitement among us. This film is simply a historic responsibility,” he says.
Originally shot in Malayalam Pazhassi Raja is also being dubbed in Tamil and Hindi with narrative voice-overs by Mohanlal, Kamal Hasan and Shah Rukh Khan respectively. The movie hits the theatres on October 16.
