Stampede in Jabalpur; 11 killed, 24 injured

Jabalpur (MP): At least eleven persons, including five women, were killed and nearly two dozen injured, three of them critically, in a stampede at a congregation at an ashram in village Bharra near Jabalpur on Thursday.

A large crowd had gathered at the Ashram of one Sarota Baba alias Ishwaridas who had been holding camps with claim to cure diseases with help of herbs and spiritual healing, when the stampede broke out following heavy rains.

The incident took place as people ran hither and thither into narrow lanes and some fell into a rivulet in the vicinity.

As many as 11 persons, including five women, were killed, he said adding some persons are also feared drowned after falling into the Bharra rivulet.

Nearly two-dozen persons were injured, of whom the condition of three was stated to be critical, he said.

The critically injured persons were rushed to hospital while rest were being given treatment at primary health centres.
