Stampede in Puri temple, 4 killed

Puri: Devotees who had come to the Jagannath temple on Saturday morning for darshan are now being carried out dead or injured.

More than four people died and over ten were injured after a stampede at the Jagannath Temple.

On Saturday morning, there was a huge crowd outside the temple gates because of karthik purnima. The stampede broke out as soon as the main door opened after a two-hour delay when everyone tried to rush in.

"We do not have a queue in Jagannath temple, but this incident happened due to the delay in the opening of the gate," says Chief Administrator of Lord Jagannath Temple, Puri, Suresh Mahapatra.

Devotees are holding the temple administration and the police responsible for this incident. They say the temple authorities did not make adequate arrangements to manage the crowd.

"The police are responsible for this. There was only one door open and the police didn't open the other doors even after the stampede started," says a stampede victim.

The Jagannath temple administration has already started an enquiry into the matter and says that all precautionary measures will be taken in future.
