Stapled visa: ace Indian shooter in trouble

Devashree Mahajan, CNN-IBN

New Delhi: Indian ace shooter Pemba Tamang, heading for Beijing for the Shooting World Cup, was stopped at the Mumbai airport Thursday night. This after the Chinese embassy issued him a stapled visa as he hailed from Arunachal Pradesh.

Bonhomie in Brazil as Manmohan Singh and Hu Jintao side step contentious issues and swear eternal friendship. But back in Delhi, it's business as usual. The Chinese Embassy issued a stapled visa to Pemba Tamang, an ace shooter heading for Beijing for a competition.

His fault is not that he's an Indian Army jawan but is a native of Arunachal Pradesh which China claims as its own. Therefore the Chinese argument is the people of Arunachal are Chinese citizens and don't need visas to go to China.

Tamang was stopped by immigration officers at Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport. He will not be cleared through immigration until the Chinese Embassy issues a proper visa which is stamped inside his passport, not stapled outside. China does the same with Kashmiris seeking to go to China, a signal to India that Beijing sees Kashmir as disputed and does not accept India's sovereignty.

It's not yet clear why the stapled visa issue was not taken up with President Hu Jintao, when senior MEA sources have admitted that the stapled visa issue cuts at the very roots of India's sovereignty.
