Mumbaikars can stargaze from a home now

Mumbai: Forty-two-year-old S Natarajan and one of his young students are training their instrument of choice — a five inch Newtonian reflector telescope — on a target millions of miles away.

Braving the winter chill, he and other astronomy junkies, who live in a housing society in south Mumbai, managed to sight Mars.

One of the astronomy enthusiasts, Priyal Rajani says, "I saw Mars which was red in colour. It was just like a ping pong ball, dancing as it was orbiting."

Just as excited is Natarajan, a BSNL employee who moonlights as an astronomy guide on a simple mission.

Natarajan, who is also an honorary guest lecturer at the Nehru Planeterium says, "My main aim is to increase exposure for all to the night sky and bring you close to nature and create a scientific temper, because this subject is not taught well in schools and colleges."

Enthusiasts said Mars looked like a king's hat, a crown and that it was an exciting experience to say the least.

Mumbaikars can experience terrace astronomy if they want — firsthand — for it's now just a phone call away. All they need to do is call up Natrajan, pay the taxi fare and reach for the stars, literally.
