Starry-eyed Patna shuns caste politics

Patna: In Bihar's Patna Saheb constituency it was an all-out filmy affair with the original Bihari Babu Shatrughan Sinha taking on the laughter king of the small screen Shekhar Suman.

The two actors are taking on each other is a region known as the boxing ring of Nitish Kumar and Lalu Prasad.

Both have been quick to adopt the political mannerism with families in tow, a prayer on their lip and lots of optimism.

"I am a good Samaritan, and I am sure people of Patna will give me a chance," hoped Congress candidate Shekhar Suman.

His wife Alka Suman said, ""I actually didn't want Shekhar to enter politics but now that he has, I am backing him to the hilt."

The fight has been so keenly watched so much so that Lalu Prasad's own make or break election from nearby Pataliputra has almost become a side show.

For starry-eyed citizens of the area, it's a welcome break.

"Its good to see these two take each other on," said a voter.

Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Shatrughan Sinha is banking on the development card to win the election.

"I say khaamosh (keep quite) to all those who are opposed to the development of Patna," said Sinha.

Patna is famous for its Gandhi Maidan, ghats of Ganga and of course it's hard-edged caste politics. With this election though, it has become the home base of filmy personalities.
