New Delhi: Mulayam Singh Yadav wants everyone to speak only in Hindi and the Karnataka government wants children to learn only in Kannada.
But for most Indians, English is the language that will provide a better life, so finds the CNN-IBN Hindustan Times State of the Nation survey conducted by GfK Mode.
The survey reveals that 87 per cent of urban Indians felt speaking in English is important to succeed in life.
A majority 54 per cent feel that speaking in fluent English brings with it a certain sense of superiority.
But does this preference for English mean neglect of the local language? Nearly six out of 10 agreed.
While 82 per cent of those surveyed said that knowing the language of the state one lives in is very important, 63 per cent wanted jobs to be reserved for those who speak the language of the state.
