New Delhi: If you're thinking about buying a pet, or already have one, it's important to know how to protect your family from infections.
Both cat and dog owners can contract fungal, viral, bacterial and parasitic infections when they're bitten scratched or have contact with the animal's waste or saliva. The symptoms of infection could range from rash, fever, cough, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting and diarrohea.
But you don't have to give up your family's furry friends either. Pets can enrich your family life are a great source of learning for your kids, and taking a few precautions can protect you and your kids from getting sick.
Make sure you routinely vaccinate your pet. Avoid feeding your pet raw meat because this can be a source of infection. Do not kiss or touch your pet with your mouth as infections can be transmitted by saliva and avoid using flea collars because kids can handle them and become sick from the chemicals they contain.
