Bhubaneshwar: The Orissa Government had promised action within a week after CNN-IBN exposed, on June 20, how babies are being sold in the name of adoption from various illegal adoption centres in Rourkela.
"There is no reason to doubt our action and it will be there for everybody to see we take action against the illegal adoption centres as per law immediately," Secretary Woman and Child Welfare Depratment, Orissa, Mona Sharma had said after the expose.
However, it’s been more than a month but none of the promises have been kept.
The two Rourkela agencies that sell babies for money are Global Village, which is promoted by an IAS officer, and a former secretary of Central Adoption Resource Agency, K P Sethy and Sahayog run by a Delhi based chartered accountant Manjit Singh Pardesi.
Five weeks later, after public protests, the Child Welfare Committee reluctantly filed an FIR. The police even seized documents from the two centres and found evidence of illegal monetary transactions, but despite such clinching evidence, the police have not yet made any arrests.
"We have registered a case and we will send our team to verify the allegations with the parents who have taken babies on adoption," Superintendent of Police, Rourkela, D S Kuttey says.
The officials from Global Village were caught on hidden camera, admitting that they sold 91 children. But inspite of that, the Child Welfare Department and the Rourkela Police are delaying the case.
"Our five member team investigated and found that the centres did not have license to give babies in adoption," Member, Child Welfare Committee, Sundergarh, H P Mahapatra said
Meanwhile, the State Youth Congress has demanded a CBI inquiry, or else they will agitate before the ongoing Assembly Session in the State.
