New Delhi: The Delhi Police is trying to tackle the problem of drunken drivers, especially on New Year's eve by encouraging people to report drunk drivers and help victims of any accident to the nearest hospital.
Hundreds of lives are lost every year in road accidents because people prefer to just drive away despite a 1989 Supreme Court ruling which makes hospitals responsible for informing the police in an accident case. Both hospitals and police say those who stop to help have nothing to fear.
“All they need to do is leave their address and telephone number with the hospital and our officer will take down the statement there itself and we always see that the person who has helped accident victim must not be harassed,” says ACP Rajan Bhagat, Delhi Police Spokesperson.
“If the person is not directly, we accept the case and start treating the patient,” says Dr. Asif Ali, Consultant Emergency Medicine.
For the good Samaritans themselves, the biggest reward is just knowing that he made a difference. It gives the person a reason to smile, that they helped someone.
