London: Singer Elton John has called for an end to violence against gay people following a spate of homophobic attacks in Ukraine. The 65-year-old Rocket Man hitmaker performed at an Aids charity concert in Kiev and in between songs he referenced newspaper reports of attacks on the gay community in the country, and made an emotional appeal to stop violence, reported Contactmusic.
"Recently I read about violence against gay people in Ukraine. Beating up gay people is wrong. This for me does not symbolise Ukraine. I plead with you: Stop the violence against gay people," he said.
John and his longtime partner David Furnish entered a civil partnership on 21 December 2005. The couple also have a son, Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John, who was born to a surrogate mother on 25 December 2010 in California.
