Rage against Raj in Bihar, train set on fire

New Delhi: In what seems like a backlash against MNS-led violence against north Indians in Mumbai, two bogies of a train – reportedly with Maharashtrian passengers on board – two bogies of Vikramshila Express were set on fire in Barh area of Bihar.

Hundreds of slogan-shouting students descended surrounded Barh railway station in rural Patna demanding that MNS leader Raj Thackeray be tried for sedition.

The students set on fire the coach of the Danapur-Durg South Bihar Express, Superintendent of Railway Police (Patna) D N Gupta was quoted as sayiing by PTI.

No one was reported injured and passengers fled soon as the attackers started setting the bogies on fire.

Police had to fire four rounds in air to disperse protesting mob at Barh station.

Some agitating students were also reported to have ransacked the Jehanabad railway station.

Meanwhile in Maharshtra, the Mumbai Mail was stopped at Aurangabad by the administration, fearing escalation of violence by protestors.

No arrest was reported. Security has been stepped up across main railway stations in Bihar.

On Tuesday, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced ex-gratia of Rs 1.5 lakh to the next of kin of the student, Pawan Mahato, who was killed in the Railway exam board attack in Mumbai on Sunday.

Pawan Kumar from Nalanda district had gone to Mumbai to appear for the competitive examinations organised by the Railways.

He was allegedly assaulted by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers and succumbed to his injuries.

An angry Nitish Kumar reportedly spoke to Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh regarding the matter.

Eastern Railway authorities have cancelled the following trains from Kolkata in the wake of the violence in Bihar:

  • Howrah-Amritsar Mail
  • Mithila Express
  • Howrah-Delhi Special
  • Howrah-New Delhi Poorva Express stopped at Asansol

Evening trains, which are scheduled to pass through Patna, are getting rescheduled, may get cancelled if necessary
