Bangalore: Niharika Jeena considers herself lucky that she is still alive. On Friday the 27-year-old software engineer from Bangalore had one of the worst experiences of her life. On her way back from work, as Niharika stood at a traffic jam near the Iblur army firing range in Bangalore, a bullet pierced her abdomen.

“I parked and started crying because I was in deep pain. Someone took me to a hospital. Doctors said it was a bullet because there was a burnt mark in my dress,” Niharika said.

The bullet was later removed by a surgery, but Niharika will have to stay in bed for a month. Niharika is the fourth person to be hit by a stray bullet in Bangalore in the last two years, and police say most of the incidents have occurred near army firing training ranges.

“The Iblur firing range is the nearest. We feel it's come from there. They say it is used by central forces like BSF and CRPF, they're checking on who was using the firing range on that day,” DCP (Central), B N S Reddy said.

The busy traffic junction, where Niharika was hit by a bullet, is used by thousands of commuters everyday. The Army has stopped using the firing range temporarily, but it has denied any role in the firing, and called the incident 'improbable'.
