Street justice in Delhi's Mayur Vihar has cops in dock

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: A daring daylight shootout followed by a brutal demonstration of street justice shocked the residents of the Capital on Wednesday and also exposed the lackadaisical attitude of the police.

The incident occurred at around 1600 hrs (IST) near the Mayur Vihar police post when the accused, a retired army jawan, attacked the victim - a yet unidentified man – for his money.

The accused Anil Kumar had followed the victim from the Mahamedha Bank in Noida's Sector 39 after he saw him withdraw over Rs 8 lakh.

Kumar is a native of Bulandshahar and runs a PCO booth in Noida.

“The accused tried to snatch the bag from him. He resisted. And then the accused fired two bullets and was nabbed while trying to run away,” says Delhi Police DCP Ajay Chaudhary.

However, Kumar’s bid to escape was stalled after he caught by the locals and handed over to the police. “I grappled with him. He said he'll kill me too,” says a local Mohammed Miraj Malik

But the Delhi police have some tough questions to answer.

Why did they reach the spot almost an hour after the incident? Why was it that the victim’s body was taken away nearly two hours after the incident?

Why was the man who helped nab the accused Anil Kumar taken for his statement almost three hours after the bullets were fired?

Why their key witness was sitting at a bus stand, across the road, for over two hours and open to everyone scrutiny before being questioned?

The police – clearly caught napping - need to more than simply thank the two brave men who helped them solve this case, even before they started investigating.
