New Delhi: The strike by workers at Maruti Suzuki India's Manesar plant entered its eighth day on Friday with no sign of an end despite the Haryana government declaring it illegal on Thursday.
The strike got a moral booster as trade unions and workers from in and around Manesar officially joined the strike. But the Maruti Suzuki chairman said they will not cede to the worker's demands and more workers will be dismissed.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court also asked the workers to keep their protest 100 metres away from the plant. But Maruti Employees union remained adamant and continued to protest within 100 metres, defying the High Court orders.
However, Maruti Suzuki has even decided to suspend production at their Gurgaon plant for the next 48 hours. Over 2000 workers are protesting the sacking of 48 workers and demanding they be taken back.
"We have come to support strike workers as they are on strike for good cause," G Manicandan Representative, Internation Metal Worker's Federation said.
With virtual shutdown, also called the Detroit of North India, Manesar' auto component industry is reeling under heavy losses, 50-60 per cent of sales of auto component industry are dependent on Maruti. But the trouble is not over, as Maruti workers pull in rank and files among Manesar industrial workers.
It's a moral booster for Maruti workers who have been demanding reinstatement of 48 sacked workers, that all the trade unions and workers in and around Manesar are supporting their cause.
But the question is will the government and Maruti management listen to the demand finally.
