London: It may not be an Indian summer in London, but art lovers in the city are certainly getting a taste of it. An exhibition titled ‘An Indian Summer’ saw some of India's top artists including, Anjoli Ela Menon, Paresh Maity and Thota Vaikuntam exhibiting under one roof.
With 50 per cent sale on day one, the exhibition has turned out to be quite a crowd puller, a clear indication that Indian art is in demand.
“London is a good market. They are very honest people, well educated and they like art,” Vaikuntam said.
It’s also exhibitions like these that see many first time buyers interested in investing in art. Prices start at £5,000 and go up as high as £35,000.
So, who exactly is this art selling to?
“It’s predominantly Asian buyers because they understand Indian art and they have been buyers for sometime now. There are new buyers as well, but I am beginning to see a trend wherein the non-Asians are beginning to collect Asian art,” Founder, SA Fine Arts, Sangeeta Ahuja explained.
It is exhibitions like these that give not only NRI’s but non-Asians and many first time buyers a chance to invest in Indian art and the hope is now to use this platform to promote emerging artists from India.
