Kids protest power cuts with candles

Mumbai: Candles burnt bright all night as young minds got together for a mid-night cramming session outside Akola's electricity board office.

The Class 10 students, who will appear for their Board Exams in less than a month, were protesting hoping their last flicker of hope will push the authorities to get their act together.

“Our exams are just round the corner and the moment we sit to study in the evening, there's a power cut,” says a student Chetan Maheshwari

Board exams are perhaps the most stressful event in a school-goer's life and power cuts are only adding to the pressure on the young minds.

We've promised good results to our parents but it's very difficult to study in these conditions,” says another student Rinkesh Chandak

Meanwhile in Thane CNN-IBN's Citizen Journalist Godhuli Beteille asks why Thane must face four-hour power cuts daily while neighbouring Mumbai enjoys a blissful 24 hour supply.

"I have just one question for the Government. Are we non-Mumbaikars lesser mortals to be made to suffer like this,” Godhuli Beleille says.

Even the states all-important industrial sector, has not been spared. They are doomed to go without power for two whole days a week.

"We're trying our best to regularise power supply,” says Dinesh Parikh of the Thane Belapur Indian Association.

With a power shortfall of over 5700 MW's Maharashtra looks all set for another sweltering summer.
