Protests shut Manipur college, stuents suffer

Imphal: Education in Manipur University has been hit hard by protests that stalled classes since the last two months. Student bodies have been protesting the alleged fake encounter killings on July 23.

Photographs published by a news magazine had reportedly shown that a man was unarmed when the police allegedly killed him and termed it as an encounter death.

Soon after the issue hit stands, violent protests rocked the insurgency-hit state and citizens protested violently against what they called a fake encounter.

Hundreds of protestors took to streets demanding stringent action against the police commandoes.

Paramilitary presence inside the campus of Manipur University did not deter the killing of a professor. He was shot dead outside the campus library, signifying how every movement in Manipur is under the shadow of the gun.

Every single classroom in the college is empty and the state government run by Chief Minister Ibobi Singh has not been able to convince students to begin classes in earnest.

"Manipur University won't be able too postpone class. They won't be able to give this year as zero year. By not taking class, we won't be able to sit for exams," said a worried student.

There have been open discussions between the guardians and different bodies on the question of right to life versus right to education. Despite appeals to lift the boycott, the stalemate continues.

"We just feel very strange without classes. The boycott has been very long," complained another student.
