Ahmedabad: For many, a stint at the Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad means a salary in lakhs and an assured job.
But Satvik Upadhyay and Ankit Mathur didn't have to think twice before opting out of the campus placements. They wanted to run their own company.
Now, Upadhyay and Mathur, along with two other friends, plan to launch a website aisapaisa.com, which would be a platform for Indian equity investors.
Upadhyay says the stint at IIM-A will help him in his endeavour.
"May be the idea would have come, but perhaps I would not have executed it as well. A degree from this institute has been of great help,” he says.
This year, 11 students have opted out of campus placements. Eighty-seven per cent of the students have opted for jobs in India and Asia Pacific, up from 77 per cent last year.
Consulting continues to be the most preferred job for IIM-A students. The maximum overseas annual pay package offered this year is Rs 1.44 crore, while highest domestic pay package offered is Rs 60 lakh.
IIM-A director Samir Barua says the highest pay package also includes bonuses offered by the hiring companies.
"The number $360,000 is based on the average bonus that the company has paid. We have no idea if the other B-schools are quoting the figures with the average bonus or not,” he says.
This year - apart from the usual recruiters - hedge funds, real estate, media and industrial marketing companies also showed interest in the placements for the first time.
