London: A day after the Channel 4’s sting on data thefts in Indian call centres, Vice President, The National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) Sunil Mehta was in London for some damage control.

Mehta said that NASSCOM was in touch with the producers and a police investigation is already underway.

"As soon as we heard about this we asked the producers for information. When we got the additional information, we lodged a complaint and the police are already investigating," Mehta said.

Talking about the impact of the sting, Mehta said that cyber crime is a global reality and the challenge is how to control it.

"I think if you see the incidents of cyber crime around the world, you will see they have grown and they will grow. It's important to stay ahead of the criminals and that's the key message of the programme," Mehta added.

Meanwhile, cyber crime expert Riten Gohil, who works closely with the Indian BPO industry, says while security standards are high in India, young employees need more training on corporate responsibility and confidentiality.

Gohil added that consumers also need to be more aware.

"The consumers are an equal partners in the fight against financial crime," he pointed out.

The episode has brought India's booming BPO sector under the scanner and it will take a good PR exercise to reassure consumers that cases like these are the exception and not the norm.
