New Delhi: A CNN-IBN Special Investigation shows that the Congress MP from Assam, Moni Kumar Subba, has much to hide about his nationality.
Subba has consistently lied about his age, education and place of birth, even to Indian Parliament, of which he is a member.
As per his academic records, Subba claims to have studied at Gandhi Vidyalaya, Bordubi, in Assam’s Tinsukia district.
His Lok Sabha nomination papers of 2004 show he completed his Class VIII from Gandhi Vidyalaya in 1972, a claim duly recorded on the official Lok Sabha website as well.
But Karma Kanu, who married Subba in 1978 as his third wife, says Subba has no records to show that he ever attended a school in Assam. "He hasn’t studied. So who gave him the certificate? You guys go and find out from his school," she says.
CNN-IBN's Special Investigation went to Tinsukia for a cross-check with his school and dug up government documents only to discover that Subba could have never been a student in the said school.
Here’s how. According to a report of the Assam Inspector of Schools, Bordubi has three Gandhi Vidyalayas, a primary school and a medium school — both of which were established in 1973 — and a high school, which was set up in 1999.
But Subba claims to have passed Class VIII from Gandhi Vidyalaya in 1972, when the school did not even exist.
When confronted on hidden camera, Subba rejected these facts. Excerpt from the conversation:
CNN-IBN: Aapne jis school se kaha ki aapne VIII pass kiya hai, 1972 mein, vo school bana hi nahi tha 1972 mein. (The school you claim to have studied in did not even exist in 1972.)
Subba: Vo sab hai hi nahi. (That’s not true.)
CNN-IBN: Wo bhi kagaz hain mere paas. (I have the documents.)
Subba: Wo sab galat baat hai. (It’s all wrong.)
He then tried to insist that someone else had filled his nomination papers.
Subba: Nomination mein lagane ka zaroorat nahin padtah hain. (There is no need to attach these documents with the nomination papers).
CNN-IBN: Zaroorat nahin padtah hain toh aapne kyon lagaya, ye aap jaane (If it’s not needed, why did you attach it?)
Subba: (Brushes it away) Doosre ne lagaya (Someone else put it).
CNN-IBN: Nahin toh. Yeh to aap hee ka kagaz hai (No, but these are your papers).
Subba: Arre, laga diya toh hum kya karenge? (If someone has attached them, what can I do?)
So, according to his 2004 election papers, not only did Subba pass Class VIII from a school that didn't exist, he was also 22 at the time. All of these raise strong suspicion that Subba had to take resort to these lies as a clumsy cover-up for an even bigger lie that he is not an Indian at all.
