Kolkata: For three decades, fans have longed for one glimpse of reclusive actress Suchitra Sen, arguably Bengal's greatest living legend. However, when the opportunity presented itself, people decided to respect the actress's wish for privacy.
Hospitalised a short while ago, Suchitra Sen's illness created a frenzy among her fans, all agog to know of the well-being of the goddess of Bengali cinema.
It gave Sumon Dey, a journalist with the regional TV channel, Star Anand, an opportunity to go undercover and find out more about the actress; Dey checked in as a patient into the same nursing home as she.
However, when the first pictures were about to be aired, the actress' family intervened and requested the channel to honour her desire for privacy. Suchitra Sen's fans also added their voice, saying they respected her wishes.
"We should not intrude into her privacy," said a middle-aged fan. "The fact that she has maintained her privacy is what we like about her."
"It is unethical to do something without one's approval," said another fan. "I would like to see a recent picture of her, though," he confessed.
The channel gave into the request and put their sting-operation-like-shoot on hold. Instead, they only aired a sketch of the actress made by the reporter.
