Sudan expels aid workers, hunger crisis looms large

New Delhi: Sudan is at the cusp of a major humanitarian crisis. More than a million people could go hungry in Darfur from the month of May, as a result of gaps left by the expulsion of foreign aid and relief groups by the government.

This shocking assessment has been made by a joint UN-Sudan group, and the onus will now lie on the UN and Sudan to plug these holes.

Khartoum expelled 13 foreign aid organisations and closed three local ones this month after the International Criminal Court (ICC)'s arrest warrant for President Omar al-Bashir. It accuses aid groups of collaborating with the ICC.

The ICC had reportedly issued arrest warrants for a Sudanese minister and a militia leader suspected of war crimes in the Darfur region.
