Bridgetown: Sunil Narine has been dropped from West Indies' squad for the first Test against Zimbabwe starting March 12, while Marlon Samuels has returned after a two-month injury lay-off. Narine has been replaced with offspinner Shane Shillingford in a 13-man squad for the Bridgetown Test.
Samuels' return will boost the West Indian batting line-up, for he had been in excellent form prior to being hit in the face during a Big Bash League match in Australia in January. Fast bowler Shannon Gabriel also made a comeback from a stress injury, while experienced quicks Ravi Rampaul and Fidel Edwards have been axed. The two others to be dropped from the squad are batsmen Kirk Edwards and Assad Fudadin.
Narine struggled in West Indies' last Test series, against Bangladesh, taking three wickets in two matches at 114.33. Shillingford last played a Test in England in May 2012. He is the second spinner in the squad along with Veerasammy Permaul, who impressed on the Bangladesh tour with eight wickets at 31.62.
Fast bowlers Ravi Rampaul and Fidel Edwards were also not named in a 13-man squad for the first match against Zimbabwe next week.
The squad for the second Test against Zimbabwe will be named later.
