Surat: Police in Surat have booked and arrested 84 house owners for not following a police directive that requires information on tenants.
One of the persons booked by the police is businessman Dinesh Maurya. He and 83 other house owners have been booked and arrested by the Surat City police for not providing complete information about their tenants to police.
Maurya is now repentant.
"It was my carelessness, but now on, I will ensure that I will provide all information to the police," Maurya says.
The police have also shut down about 30 cyber cafes for flouting various norms. This in wake of the threat to the city and the recent low intensity blasts around the Rander area.
"After the Jaipur blast and the blast in the city, we have begun strict implementation of the notification, as people are not taking it seriously enough," RMS Brar, Commissioner of Police, Surat City, said.
In fact even industry associations were asked to attend a seminar organised by the police where they were asked to take precautions to avert an emergency.
However, the industry feels the police need to be more vigilant.
"This is a good move, but the police also needs to streamline this data and work efficiently," Chetan Shah, South Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry President, said.
It's now for the police to ensure that the implementation of the notification is a sustained drive.
