New Delhi: The business community of Gujarat is focusing on the elections leaving aside their daily business. Some have taken their helicopter and some have taken their airplanes to help the ministers in their campaign. This time around the money invested in the elections has been ten times more.

A diamond merchant, Vasant Gajera uses his helicopter, not to travel for business but to campaign for Congress. Accompanying Vasant are others from the Gajera community who were supporting BJP last year but this year they are campaigning against the BJP.

“All the people from the diamond industry were campaigning for BJP, but this year, we are supporting Congress,” says Vasant Javery.

Last elections, Surat’s diamond traders had pledged their support for Modi with contributions of about Rs 30 crores. However, this year they have decided to pool in 200 crores to remove him.

“Some have bought a helicopter, some have bought an airplane, and some have hired them for the campaign,” says Rohit Mehta, Joint Secretary, Surat Diamond Industry.

Surat traders seem to be very unhappy with Narendra Modi. They blame him for unpopular decisions like stopping the Ratna Kalakar housing scheme meant for the diamond community. Then the Gujarat floods extracted a heavy toll of Rs 1600 crores with little support from Modi’s government.

Development in Gujarat is one of Narendra Modi war cries in this election. But it has Surat’s diamond traders seeing red and they seem determined to make Modi pay the price for ignoring them.
