A team of 36 surgeons, paramedical staff and technicians lead by Dr Sharan Patil, battled for a grueling 27 hours to separate Lakshmi from her parasitic twin.
“It is a very proud moment for all of us. She is stable,” said Orthopeadic Surgeon, Dr Sharan Patil.
But Lakshmi is still not completely out of danger. The doctors at Sparsh hospital are being extremely cautious, as they continue monitoring her condition over the next 48-72 hours. Even the mammoth surgery was fraught with difficulties.
The nearly 27 hour long surgery involved:
- The paediatric team separating Lakshmi and her twin's tissues.
- The twin's healthy kidney was then transplanted into Lakshmi's body.
- Her genital system and bladder was then moved from the left side to a more centred position.
- Lakshmi and her twin's spine was separated.
- And her pelvic bones were then reconstructed.
Meanwhile Lakshmi's anxious parents were overwhelmed by the glad tidings.
“I am very happy that the operation was a success,” said Lakshmi’s father, Shambhu.
After the crucial 72 hour wait the next step will be to watch Lakshmi recuperate, something that the doctors are optimistic about.
“We are going to start testing her once we remove the stitches, we'll be able to on her feet,” orthopeadic surgeon, Dr Sharan Patil.
From Bihar to Bangalore, it has been an incredible journey for two-year-old Lakshmi.
The journey to recovery is not yet complete but the remarkable effort and Lakshmi's successful surgery by the team of 36 incredible doctors is in a way the beginning of this two-year-olds life or is a new beginning for this two-year-old olds like.
