New Delhi: Surrogate motherhood just might be regulated in India, as a draft paper is being readied.
With the demand for a rented womb growing, the government is working on a law that stipulates a written agreement between the surrogate mother and the client.
However, the government is unable to decide whether fertile women who want to avoid pregnancy and its cosmetic side-effects should be allowed to hire a womb or not. The question is unanswered in the case of working women, as well, who may consider pregnancy harmful for their careers.
The government is also unable to take a stand on whether to homosexuals and single parents should be allowed to have a child through a surrogate mother.
The final dilemma is whether surrogate motherhood be only for altruistic purposes or can it also be for commercial purposes.
The government also feels a need to have a mechanism in place in order to oversee the implementation of the proposed law. To that end, a regulatory body is also being proposed, which would be constituted by an act of parliament...
The government further plans to invite stakeholders and lawmakers to debate the contentious points next month, before a final law is drafted and put before the cabinet.
