Kulhand/Jammu: It has been a year since 33 civilians were massacred by terrorists in the Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir. The survivors of the massacre however, are still living in fear.
The villagers of Kulhand in Doda still remember the brutal day on May 1, 2006, when suspected terrorists massacred 19 of its residents.
Meanwhile, 14 others were also killed on the same day in the nearby village of Basantgarh. Many of the victims were young men and children.
Geelu Devi, lost her husband Jagdish Raj and seven-year-old daughter Sapna. Geelu Devi herself was shot in the leg, and now lives with her surviving five children in the shadow of fear.
“We can never feel safe again. It's a constant threat for us,” says Geelu Devi.
After the massacre in Kulhand, the state and the Centre had both promised more safety measures including modern weapons for the Village Defence Committee (VDC) and a proper road for the village. But the villagers say none of these have materialised.
Says a resident of Kulhand village, Girdhari Lal, “We are seeing administration in the place exactly a year later.”
The administration claims a larger security presence has ensured the village's safety but admit they are yet to fulfill some promises.
“I agree with you that the defence minister Pranab Mukherjee had promised VDCs for this area but we are working on that proposal,” says Deputy Commissioner, Doda, Sourav Bhagat.
While these proposals take shape, the villagers here only hope that violence does not come knocking at their doors once again.
