Kerala: Even as the Kerala High Court was yet to decide on a PIL seeking orders to make Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman PJ Kurien an accused in the 1996 Suryanelli gangrape case, a lower court in the state has backed him saying there were no grounds to accept a case against him.

A court in Peerumed on Saturday rejected the rape survivor's private plea to re-admit a case against Kurien.

The magistrate said there were no fresh evidences which suggest that Kurien was involved in the crime.

The girl has alleged that the Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman was one among the 40 people who raped her in 1996.
