New Delhi: There has been a fresh twist in the mysterious death case of Air Deccan employee Sanskriti Sinha. Sources in the Delhi Police say they are very close to solving the hit-and-run case.
Twenty-six-year old Sinha was found dead on October 22 under mysterious circumstances on the tarmac of New Delhi airport on Monday night.
Sinha, a maintenance technician, reportedly died after being hit by a vehicle when she was heading towards the hangar area to attend to some engineering requirements at an aircraft. Her head was completely crushed.
Sources in the police say they have identified the suspect who was driving the car that hit Sanskriti. The suspect is employed with the Airport Traffic Control department.
The car that ran her over was a Mahindra Scorpio, an airport follow-me car, owned by Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL).
The police have found the tyres had been changed after the accident and it was the suspect who informed the police about the incident.
The Links
According to investigators, Sinha got a phone call came at 2145 hrs (IST) on Monday night to attend Bay No.123. The wristwatch she was wearing stopped working at 2155 hrs (IST). At 2210 hrs (IST), a pilot of Spice Jet, readying for take-off, informed the ATC about a dead body on the tarmac.
A team of the Central Forensic Science Laboratory also inspected the spot where the body was found and said there were tyre marks near the body.
While a statement issued by Air Deccan says the incident appears to be a case of hit-and-run, DGCA’s statement seems to have deepened the mystery. According to them, some of the marks on her body could have been caused before her death.
Terming the incident "unfortunate", Arun Arora, spokesperson of Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), said that there were extensive training programmes for all vehicle drivers at the airport. He added that periodic refresher courses and random checks were also conducted to ensure compliance to norms.
The Loopholes
Entry to the tarmac area inside the airport is restricted. That means there should have been a check on every person who enters or leaves. And yet, hours after the incident, police haven't detained any suspects.
Sinha’s post mortem was conducted in Capital’s Safdarjung Hospital. Medical Superintendent Jagdish Prasad told CNN-IBN Sinha’s heart was damaged and spleen ruptured. “Both lungs were lacerated and all vital organs were damaged on the spot. Momentum of the vehicle that hit her must have been high. This could be because of speed or due to a heavy vehicle,” he said.
The Victim
Sinha was a graduate in aeronautical engineering and was working in the aviation industry for the past six years. She came to Delhi to pursue higher studies and was working with Air Deccan for the past one year in the technical department.
She was to get married in February next year and stayed in Mahipalpur with two women - Shilpi and Shipra.
A pall of gloom has descended at her residence in Patna. The household, buzzing with preparations for her engagement till Monday, went into mourning after report of Sinha’s death came in.
"She told me that she would be working at night as she gets to learn more. But now she is dead,” said her mother Dr Sheila Kumar.
Sinha’s roommate Shilpi, who works with Air Sahara, was quoted as saying by agencies, "We spoke to her at about 9 pm. She had no enemies and the incident is really shocking for us.”
