Suspects still at large in TN highway murder attempt

Chennai: Nearly a week after the incident and a day after the shocking video of an attempt to murder against two Highway Department officials in Kanyakumari hit headlines, the main suspects are still at large.

Arjunan, the driver of the car, is allegedly the son of the priest of the temple, which was being demolished. After the incident he apparently abandoned the car and escaped.

The other accused in the case is the son-in-law of the temple priest. A local lawyer, the other suspect is seen in the video having a heated argument with the authorities before the attack.

Now local lawyers are protesting against any move to arrest him and he has reportedly got anticipatory bail. However, the police say that they are taking steps to arrest him.

Meanwhile, engineers in the Highways Department say that they will go on a strike from February 26 if strict action is not taken against the accused.

“In future sufficient protection should be given law enforcing personnel like the engineers during demolition work,” General Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Highways Engineers Association E Venkatachalam said.

Engineer Anthony Xavier, who was grievously injured in the incident, now hopes that the video will ensure that the guilty are punished and better protection is provided to officers.

“Arjunan repeatedly threatened and kept saying how I would have to pay through my life for the demolition,” Xavier said.

Meanwhile, the government says it has instructed police officials to be more vigilant and careful when such encroachment evictions are carried out.
