New Delhi: Suspended IPS officer B B Mahanti, who is in hiding after his rape-convicted son fled from police custody, has told the Supreme that he will surrender in two weeks.
Mahanti went underground in August 2007 after a court in Jaipur issued a warrant against him for helping his son Bitti jump parole.
A fast track court convicted Bitti in Jaipur for raping a German research scholar in Alwar in 2006. The Orissa government has admitted that it has failed to track down either Mahanti despite its best efforts.
Mahanti’s lawyer on Thursday told the Supreme Court that his client wants the Jaipur court to hear his bail immediately after he surrenders before it.
The Supreme Court declined to accept Mahanti’s appeal, saying it can’t fix the timetable of a lower court but observed the bail application must be heard speedily.
Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Pattnaik, whose government has admitted that it has failed to arrest the Mahantis, has promised strict action will be taken against the police officer when he surrenders. "If he surrenders then the law will take it's course. Whatever is legal and appropriate will be done. Nobody is above the law," the Chief Minister said.
The Jaipur court has declared Mahanti, a former chief of Orissa Home Guards, an absconder on suspicion that he helped his son escape while on parole and is hiding him.
