Suspended IPL chief Modi's passport revoked

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: The suspended Indian Premier League (IPL) commissioner Lalit Modi's passport has been revoked by the government on the recommendations of the Enforcement Directorate.

Sources tell CNN-IBN that Modi, who is currently in London, cannot now leave the UK. India will work through the UK foreign office to bring him back. However, Modi has the option to appeal to a UK court against repatriation.

The ED had issued a blue corner notice to Modi in October while investigating the finances of IPL teams.

Reacting to the order, Lalit Modi told CNN-IBN that this is unfair. "I have not received any show cause in the past nine months. I have always said I am ready to cooperate with any probe. The only reason I am not coming back to

India is because I fear for my safety. I am the victim of a political witch hunt. This is the most corrupt government in the history of India," Modi said.

Modi's lawyer Mehmood Abdi, reacting to the same said the development was shocking. "We heard the passport officer assuring us about the final opportunity for a fair hearing because the previous hearing was inconclusive," he said.

Abdi also said that such an act is infringement of one's rights.
