Islamabad: A son of Maulana Sufi Muhammad who brokered a peace deal between the Taliban and the provincial government has been killed in shelling in northwestern Pakistan, a media report said on Thursday.

The spokesman of outlawed Tehrik-e-Nafaz-e-Shariat-e-Muhammadi (TNSM) Ameer Izzat Khan said Maulana Kifayatullah, son of Maulana Sufi Muhammad, was killed and his aide injured in Maidan area of Lower Dir in North West Frontier Province (NWFP), Geo TV reported.

TNSM's Sufi Muhammad was arrested in 2001 and released after years in prison.

The NWFP government and the TNSM had February 16 inked a deal to impose sharia law in Swat and six other districts of the province that are collectively known as the Malakand division in return for the militants laying down their arms.

Instead, the Taliban moved south from their Swat headquarters and occupied Buner, which is just 100 km from Islamabad.

The military operation in Dir began April 26 and spread to Buner two days later.

On Sunday, Sufi Mohammad had rejected as "unilateral" the decision of the NWFP government to establish Islamic appelate courts in the Malakand division saying he had not been consulted.
