Tackling terror with gadgets

London: With terrorism on the mind of many travelers these days, a new industry is enjoying booming business.

Specially trained dogs sniff out explosives. It’s a show – a demonstration at a London counter-terrorism conference where security firms meet with politicians, businessmen and companies selling the latest anti-terrorist gadgetry.

Safetyhood.Com’s Jeff Charlton says, “We have been told by our MI-5, the same as your FBI, that we should expect that terrorism, CBR – chemical, biological, radiological – is going to be with us for 30 years, so I think that is something we need to be aware of.”

Jeff Charlton's company sells a 'pocket escape respirator' that can be carried in a purse or briefcase.

He says the plastic bags give you about 20-minutes of filtered air to get away from a gas or chemical attack.

“You have got a decision to make – do I want to put a bag on my head and live? Or do I want to suffer the consequences of exposure?” adds Charlton.

Given the increasingly inventive ways terrorists are striking – like using backpack explosives to attack London's transport system or the chaos that rose out of reports that terrorists planned to use liquid explosives to blow up planes out of London in August.

The exhibitors of the gadgets say we need to adapt to a terrorist threat that is always coming up with new methods.

Possibly coming to an airport near you, a new generation of X-ray scanners so accurate, they can determine chemical or biological weapons, or explosives, even if you ingest them in your body.

The manufacturers of these hi-tech X-rays say if a would-be suicide bomber swallowed a condom full of explosive with intent to blow him up – their machine will know.

There are concerns about the new technology. How much liberty and privacy should the public be asked to give up in order to stay safe? It’s the job of the experts attending the conference to make sure technology keeps up with the terrorists' evolving capability.
