New Delhi: India's premier Fashion Week has a new venue, the decidedly tacky Pragati Maidan.
“I have to go away and laugh a lot,” said designer Ranna Gill when asked about the venue.
One look at Pragati Maidan and you know exactly why she wants to laugh. This old expo venue which is this season playing host to the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week is getting a fresh coat of paint, hammering away at the loose ends and trying to become smarter.
“We are completely revamping the place,” said Executive Director, FDCI, Sumeet Nair.
After many a season at luxury hotels, the Fashion Week needs a bigger venue and the sprawling Pragati could be it. And all this work is getting mixed reactions
“A common man who comes here is not interested in fashion,” said a resident of Delhi
Another resident added, “From a business perspective it will grow bigger.”
With more than 70 designers participating at the fashion week this season, India’s fashion industry is ballooning. So it needs a bigger space and it is clearly outgrown the fancy hotels. Therefore a trade event gets a trade ground. But the Pragiti Maidan has always been a bit tacky. Can the Fashion Week help it outgrow its tacky roots?
Hall 7, which is hosting the fashion week, is spread across 7,300 sq metres. So if nothing else, whether you like it or not, there'll be enough place for everybody.
