25 lakh-insurance on TADA court judge

Mumbai: Judge P D Kode's life has only been insured for Rs 25 Lakh - an amount, which experts say is miniscule. He is the man who is passing sentences in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case.

Saluting the man as his cavalcade enters the TADA court in Mumbai's Arthur Road jail. Surrounded by policemen and his escort gypsies with Maharashtra police commandos, Judge P D Kode sits secure in this bullet-proof ambassador that can take on the might of an AK 47.

Nothing has ever come in the path of this man, who has presided over one of the longest trials in Indian history and for 11 years hasn't missed even a single day not even when his father passed away.

But with a 100 people convicted by him - he is believed to be amongst the top on the underworld's hit list.

Senior advocate in the 1993 Bombay blasts case Majeed Memon says, “A case of this magnitude where so many people would be the recipient of sentences varying from RI to the extreme sentence certainly there is a possibility of displeasure or wrath on the part of the convict."

Which is why the security is all encompassing.

Kode never steps out of his home except on his way to court and his annual pilgrimage to Shirdi. There are forty-five sentries around his house and the security men accompany his family wherever they go.

But the rising threat perception has forced the government to give him an insurance cover of Rs 25 Lakh, which experts feel is a pittance.

Financial Planner Gaurav Mashroowala says, ”I'm not sure it's a high amount. Honestly, if the government thinks he could be killed the amount should be Rs 1 crore."

So opinion may be divided on Judge Kode's insurance cover, but the one thing that will have this man's undivided attention is the 1993 blasts case.
